    Install the new iTunes here; Apple - iTunes - Everything you need to be entertained.

    Then try to connect your iPod with your with iTunes on and update this software here;
    Apple - iPod touch - Get great new features with the 3.1 software.

    When that is not working because of the button, I think you must go to the shop to repair or an Apple store. Or buy a new better iPod touch 3G.

    Here you can see how you can make a free account without a credit card and then you can pay with iTunes cards;

    I'm happy to hear that it is all working now
    Most Apps are compatible, but you can find it at the 'info' of the App.
    Did you get a PayPal account?
