Default How do I back up my ipod?

My Palm Tungsten E finally gave up the ghost so I have bought an ipod Touch. The fact that it plays music is incidental - I just want a PDA.

After three days I am baffled and frustrated by the fact that I can't seem to back up the calendar, contacts or notes. I shall have to spend hours manually entering the backed up information from my defunct Palm, and I can't bear to think that I shall lose any new information if anything happens to my ipod.

Why doesn't the 'sync' back up calendar, contacts and notes? Or are they backed up, but you just can't see them? (which would be pretty stupid)

I have seen some references to being able to 'sync' with Outlook, but I haven't worked this out yet. Is there anu other way? Are there any apps which will perform a proper back up?

    Hi Hereistom,

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately it didn't help. The ipod appears to sync fine, but I cannot see on the PC screen any evidence of data from the ipod calendar, contacts or notes. If those data have transferred to the PC during the sync, then where are they? Why can't I see them, edit them, etc? According to the Apple Support site, the following is true.

    Summary
When you sync your iPhone or iPod touch using iTunes, some of your content is backed up on your computer. You cannot edit this backup or sync it with other applications or services, or with non–iPhone OS devices.

Why on earth has Apple set up the sync function so that you can't edit your data, or even see it????

I'm not from Apple, so I don't know why they did it this way, I think it because they're afraid for copy of programs.
But ok, if You have to do a restore, then the latest copy wil be placed back on your iPod and that is with programs, calender, notes and so on.

    Lightbulb Solved my own problem

I have just solved my own problem. In iTunes I selected Devices and then the Info tab. I checked the various boxes to make Calendar, Contacts and Notes sync with Microsoft Outlook. All my data are now visible and capable of being edited etc. Only one out of ten to Apple though, for making backups so restrictive and less than straightforward for the novice to use.
