I just bought my first iPod. It's a Touch Gen 2 (32 Gig, for those playing along at home

). I also bought an Arcam rDock so that I could (a) charge it easily and (b) play the tunes through my home stereo.
Warning - the new iPod Touch Gen 2 does not charge with the current docks. I contacted Arcam directly (very helpful b.t.w) and this is the reply I got back:
"This has just come to light, the R-dock is specified on the original specification of the Ipods. All Apple Ipods use a system called “DIRECT CHARGE” and the all of them use this method so the R-dock was designed to work in this way so it can charge all items, I use the older touch myself and have no problem at all. Now however Apple have released the new version of the Touch and the 3G Iphone and for some reason Apple have decided to use a charging method called “USB NON DIRECT” this is not compatible with R-Dock as it is specified to work on Apples own specification, sadly there is no possible way for the R-dock to charge products that require this method....I am sorry that this will cause you an issue but after a few conversations with other manufacturers there are not many Docks on the market that will charge these new products due to this sudden change."
So if you have just put your hard earned down on a new Touch and you want to buy a Dock/Speakers to go with it, make sure that they are compatible with your Touch. Please note, this change only applies to the latest iPod touch and iPhone 3G and should only affect charging. The sound comes out fine (at least it did on the R-Dock). None the less, most of us use Docks to charge our units (don't we?).
Sorry for the long post, but this issue caught me by surprise. I just wanted to warn everyone so they don't suffer the same fate.
Cheers,
Paul
